Showtime has announced that Fedor Emelianenko will take on undefeated fighter Brett Rogers at an unnamed venue at an unnamed time.

Fedor (30-1) is widely considered the top-heavyweight in the world, and will be making his Strikeforce debut. He was supposed to fight Josh Barnett, at the now-ill fated Affliction show, but it was cancelled when Barnett failed to acquire a license due to a failed drug test.

Fedor was heavily courted by the UFC, but decided to sign with Strikeforce.

Rogers (10-0)  is coming off an impressive knockout of former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski.

The fight does not have a date set, as the details are still being worked out.

From a certain standpoint I can understand why Strikeforce gave Fedor Rogers as a first opponent. I mean, they wanna make it look like Fedor is an exciting guy coming in, but I really dislike the fact that Fedor is fighting a guy whose only claim to fame is beating a guy Fedor already knocked out. He should’ve fought Overeem immediately, and Werdum fights Rogers for the winner of Fedor/Overeem. That’s what should’ve gone down.

Totally agreed Kimura. I was really hoping for an overeem bout as well. There’s no doubt they are trying to build Fedor up. He’s still not very know to the general american public and hes gotta be there main man if strikeforce wants to suceed. Brett has a slim punchers chance but I highly expect fedor to submit him and rather quickly. We havn’t really seen rodgers on the ground, but im sure he doesn’t compare. Either way still excited to see Fedor fighting again….

im excited for this, rogers may not have the fanciest submission, great grappling manovers, great judo but he can fight and he is just as much threat as overeem.overeem vs werdum remach is a good one for the belt as werdum is coming in off a great run in the ufc,a good win of kyle and he has already beaten the heavyweight champion of strikeforce.makes sense but a great match with rogers and fedor for sure.

I don’t think it’s fair to say Rogers is as much of a threat to Fedor as Overeem. Overeem is much more experienced against better competition, and is much more technical, in pretty much every aspect. Rogers looks technical against the tomato cans he beat before the AA fight. He put Arlovski down quick, but he swarmed him and Arlovski wasn;t ready, great win, but hardly one showing technical prowess. I’d say Overeem at this point is easily more of a threat, but to be honest neither of them are too much of a threat to Fedor.

This is what happens when fedor goes to the little league instead of the majors he gets easy fights and allot of money

I can’t argue with any of this…especially Rage…good one, “Little League”. I think K-fan has it the best…Rodgers vs. Werdum…that way it’s a lil’ more of a challenge for Fedor. He should wipe thru Strikeforce….then what???

Here I was getting all long winded and intense, and my computer ate my post…

Suffice it to say that I agree with all of you, Fedor has Brett outgunned, and should mangle Rogers. Emelianenko has three times the experience in the pro ring, proven ability to take a shot and return fire (Fujita), proven ability to wrestle big strong guys and win (Semy Schiltz, watch the fight before you criticize) proven knockout power with deadly accuracy, and that icy demeanor that spells trouble for all of his opponents.

Also agree that you should check out Overeem’s record, he’s got over 40 MMA fights, and several kickboxing matches as well as a Thai boxing match, which add up to a lot more experience than Brett Rogers.

Have to say that it makes sense to me to give Fedor the Rogers fight first, in essence to earn his title shot within the Strikeforce organization, even though most of us think Fedor is already the best in the business. Don’t see any real challenge for Fedor there, but anything can happen in this sport…

randy cotore had 3 times the experience on brock, herring had 8 times the experience on brock.guida had 20 times the experience on bobby lashley.kongo had 5 times the experience on valasquez.people putting easy fight, that is no easy fight, rogers is very hungry and you will see the best rogers ever.this guy came from the streets,he aint going to be nerveous against fedor like some are because he knows what he has to go back to.this is his meal ticket to the big money and nice life.he’s going to die trying.i see your points bout overeem should face him but why should strikeforce give him a title shot,if he wins they will have to pay loads everytime he defends it.they would rather take the chance of making rogers a star and paying him less than half they would fedor.there is a very good chance he can ko fedor.its good buisness by strikforce.

Great point Daley. Experience sure doesn’t tell the whole story when it comes to straight-up skill and ability. Rogers certainly does have as good a chance as anybody, really. However, I don’t see him overcoming Fedor. He could shock the world, but it’s doubtful.

its just cause he’s been like the terminator-fedor that is and i just dont know how he has done it,i like to watch someone so invincible get beat by an up and comer.watch there metal finally crack.mainly because this fedor thing where he fights 1 or 2 fights a year pisses me off abit.if your top of the chain you should take on all comers to stay there on a regular basis.like dana white said with gsp and anderson silva, they take the challenge.fedor plays money games on these 1 off shows every 9 months is silly when you got warriors fighting for a living 10 times a year.

  13. Posted August 27, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Daley i hope rogers does KO fedor and prove he’s overrated but i just don’t see it actually happening

  14. Posted August 27, 2009 at 11:17 pm

Daley, everybody is thinking that and I’m sure a lot of us wanna seea it happen too but like it’s been said…is realistic. One more thing…”On any given Sunday”…

No, experience isn’t the only thing, but it’s one of the main things. All things being equal, with two fighters of similar talents, experience will often be the deciding factor, with the more experienced competitor having faced more combat situations from which to draw and use in the current contest, giving that fighter a decided advantage.

You can pump up Rogers all you want to with all of the frustration so many fans are feeling toward Fedor and his decision not to sign with the UFC, but it still does not add up. I watched four or five of Brett’s fights previous to the Arlovski fight, they’re out there on the ‘net, download them and watch them. His opponents were fat out of shape tough-man types who could barely stand in long enough for him to knock them senseless. That’s not the kind of experience that’s going to prepare Rogers for the premiere heavyweight currently active in MMA.

Can’t take it away from Brett, as I’ve also posted elsewhere, that he overwhelmed a former UFC heavyweight champion in Arlovski, and did it in impressive form. At 6′5″ and 265 lbs, Rogers is actually pretty nimble on his feet and has obvious power. One lesson that every green belt learns however is that all the power in the world does not help you if you can’t hit the guy, and as one of the most experienced heavyweights out there, I don’t see Fedor standing in front of this guy and inviting him to clip him on the chin.

Haven’t been able to find any reference to Rogers working any kind of wrestling or BJJ, while Fedor is a Sambo world champion, a former Judo champion, and has won more fights by submission than Rogers has had fights in total. You tell me that experience doesn’t matter, and I’ll tell you it’s your anger talking, and not any kind of MMA logic…

to be honest mu shin i still dont get fighting.ive seen guys win because they are bigger, skill, being pumped, good corner, composure, heavy hands, being able to take shots, good ref, good cutman.we never know really,i watched king of the cage the other day, remeber john machine lober?well he goes and breaks this kids arm, looks good doing it,put a beating on him, next match this skinny lad who took the fight on like 20 min notice ko’d lober in 5 seconds.the guy he pummled before and broke his arm was way more talented.its all unpredictable and crazy and i love it.

There’s always going to be upsets and things like that Daley. However, in general, the more experienced fighter, as long as he is also skilled, has an advantage. Obviously this doesn’t always work out. Look at Rogers/Arlovski. Arlovski made a mistake in that fight that he’s been making his entire career. He stood head on in front of Rogers with his chin out. Pedro Rizzo, Tim Sylvia, and Fedor have all capitalized on that in the past. You think he would have drawn from that experience and learned something coming into another fight against a heavy hitter, but he didn’t.
