With Pedro Sauer and Marcelo Garcia backing him, Jeff Curran has officially received his invitation from Sheikh Tahnoon of Abu Dhabi and United Arabic Emirates to the Abu Dhabi Combat Championships. This years tournament will be held in Barcelona, Spain September 26-27.
After suffering a disappointing, and controversial, decision loss to Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 42, Curran was looking for other challenges. Curran explains, “Abu Dhabi popped into my head right away. I mean, I always wanted to compete in the trials but it never worked with my fight schedule. I have some time now so i made some calls.” After those calls, along with backing from Sauer and Garcia, the Sheikh extended an invitation to the “Big Frog.”
Though Curran lost his last fight (his fourth consecutive loss) Curran was awarded his second-degree black belt from Master Sauer after the bout. While Curran has competed in grappling tournaments in the past; he has never been invited to Abu Dhabi and never trained specifically for a tournament of the caliber.
“I am really excited to train hard like i do for MMA for ADCC. Its all about stepping up for me and challenging myself,” said Curran.
