Carlos Condit: Plenty of Motivation

Posted on September 14, 2009 in: Features

Carlos Condit lost his WEC welterweight title without ever losing a fight, then lost a UFC debut that many thought he won. For his next fight against Jake Ellenberger, Condit uses it all as motivation.

When the UFC absorbed the WEC’s welterweight division, champion Carlos Condit suddenly found himself a contender again.

The champion lost his belt, without ever losing a fight.

“I always had the belt and that was something that I was training hard to defend, [and] it was something to have in your mind when training got tough,” Condit told MMAMadness.com. “Now, I use it as motivation. I have something to reach for now.”

Condit’s road back to a title starts at Ultimate Fight Night 19, when he takes on 25-fight veteran, Jake Ellenberger.

“He has good takedowns, he seems like he’s a pretty physically strong guy, and he likes to throw leather,” Condit said. “It will be a pretty explosive fight.”

Condit, who has 28 professional fights, expects the experience of both fighters to play a big factor in his fight.

“We’ll probably show a lot of different aspects of MMA,” Condit said. “Transitions from different positions from the ground, back to standing, all over the place. I think it will be a fast-paced fight and people will see a lot of good techniques.”

A month ago, Condit was not preparing to face Ellenberger. His original opponent, Chris Lytle, was force to pull out of the bout due to a serious injury, forcing Condit to change his preparation.

“For Chris, I was preparing for somebody with a great level of jiu-jitsu and some pretty good standup,” Condit said. “Ellenberger is real tough, he’s a really good wrestler. I don’t think his jiu-jitsu is on the level of Lytle’s.

“I think that my stand up’s better,” Condit said. “We’ll know when we step in the cage… but I’m not too shabby in that department. Also, I think I have the edge in jiu-jitsu.”

As extra motivation, Condit wants to win in front of the UFC fans. In his debut with the organization, Condit lost a close decision to Martin Kampmann, a fight that many people felt that we won.

“It was a very, very close fight. It could have gone either way,” Condit said. “I was pretty disappointed myself. I thought that if I could have done a little bit more I would have won the fight, so that was definitely in the back of my mind while I was training.”

The loss is just one more piece of motivation for Condit, and at UFN 19, fans will see if that motivation translates into success.

Ragingbull I agree with all your picks. I hope melvin knocks diazs damn head off, and I think ring rust is gonna be a bit of an issue for huerta. I think maynard will put him on his @$$. Condit by submission, tough fight but I think he’s got it

yeah, i would say maynard probably has the ability to stop a lot of guys with GnP by now, but Huerta is just a naturally tough dude who can take a lot of punishment, UD Maynard

Condit fought with real maturity, coming back from the verge of being knocked out twice, to recover and reclaim contender status. Ellenberger will kick himself for letting Carlos off the hook, but that’s the fight game.

Wouldn’t say Condit is ready to meet GSP, but he’s definitely ready to continue climbing the UFC welterweight ladder. Tough kid with a lot of talent and experience who keeps coming back, keeps getting better.

that was a sick fight,i thought condit was done but he took it and dished it back out.if that was swick punching him or davis he may have been put to sleep.

It was a grea come-back victory for Condit. I thought he might actually have pulled off that kimura if Ellenberger hadn’t grabbed the fence, I think it was in round two. Great showing from Ellenberger too, if he could have worked some better positioning when he dropped condit, he could definately have finished him. If Condit is gonna try to make it back up to the top of this division, he’s gonna have to learn to keep his hands up and move his head, he took way too many shots frm Jale in this fight, and if Thiago Alves does that to him, he ain’t gettng back up.
