Rua will get another shot at championship gold
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will not have to wait long for another title shot.
Following the controversial decision that saw Lyoto Machida defend his belt by the narrowest of margins, the UFC has decided to give Rua an immediate rematch.
UFC president Dana White confirmed the decision with MMAweekly.com.
“I think there will be a rematch in that fight,” White said. “I talked to both of them and they both agreed to a rematch.”
White also thinks that the fans will be happier with the rematch than they were with this fight.
You never want to hear people booing the main event,” White said after the bout. “It’s unfortunate. That’s why I truly believe, I think this will be a good rematch.”

Immediate rematch my ass. They should have gotten it right the first time. Seriously though, how many of you guys freaked out when they announced Cecil Peoples and Nelson Hamilton as the judges?
hamilton with the 10inch thick lenses in his glasses maybe needs to get it knocked up to 12 inches.cecil peoples i must admit kimura when i saw his name i was like i see this guy make some bad call’s as a ref and his judging his the same.i was watching a small show that he reffed in and the match went to a decision and he got to choose the winner,no judges just him and the guy who lost clearly pounded the other guy so i dont know what cecil’s is on but it aint watching and judging who wins.maybe he felt sorry for machida or they go out piss drinking together.they should have got it right first time, shogun should be champion and a new challenger given a shot.the ufc have done the right thing to give shogun a rematch.there both in shape so i think ufc 107 would be good.
MMA needs to revamp the judges roster with actual MMA people…if possible an ex-fighter, but then we have the problem of affiliation to perspective fighters/training camps…maybe even ex MMA referees-Big John McCarthy maybe…i don’t know but this nees to be addressed before OUR SPORT goes along the lines of a former great sport…we used to call BOXING…thanks Don King for that.
Whats up guys,
From what i gathered from watching this fight It was a case of rule difference. If this would have been a pride ruled fight (Overall scored for fighter looking to finish) Shogun would have took it. I notice machida dident land alot of his strikes but threw alot of combos. Shogun Battered him with leg and body kicks. In my opinion that was shoguns plan to begin with and it worked. I guess if you count misses for points machida wins. The rematch will tell who learned the most in the first fight about the other. Cant wait.
What up Pun haven’t heard from you in a while. Honestly since when is a fight judged according to the combos you threw? It shoul;d be what you landed. And the compustrike stats and fightmetric.com reveal that Shogun outstruck Machida in every round, and often threw more strikes overall, but still had better percentages of strikes landed. This shows that Shogun was both more aggressive and more effective. He also performed the only takedown attempts, which may not have been successful, but coupled with his effective striking clearly makem him more aggressive. He won the fight no matter qwhat way you look at it, and won every round as well.
Will look forward to the rematch. Agree with Punisher: the second fight will be a direct indication of who learned the most and can adapt the best from what they learned in the first encounter.
Would imagine both fighters will try harder to take it out of the judges’ hands and bring the fight to a non-debatable conclusion.
Whatever perspective you might have on what happened between Rua and Machida, one fact is undeniable. Shogun Rua is all the way back from his struggles through injury, all the way back in terms of his cardio conditioning, and fully integrated into fighting in the cage and under UFC rules. He didn’t miss the stomps and soccer kicks that defined many of his victories in Pride, and proved to everyone that he is a mature, disciplined, experienced warrior who can apply a well designed game plan in a championship setting.
In the second I see it going the same way or Shogun finishing it. You can’t combat the game plan he had,it was perfect! If he executes it the exact same way the second time around (Which he will!) then he’s got th strap……….LIKE HE FUCKING SHOULD HAVE HAD ON SATURDAY!!!!!
As for the judges, they should have gone to specsavers!!!!
The audience actually groaned when Peoples was announced as a judge.
I’m not as fired up as most people. I actually scored the bout 48-47 Machida. I thought Machida won rounds 1, 4, and 5, and Shogun round 2 and 4. That first round could have gone either way though, I was expecting it to a split decision.
Did Machida look off to anyone else? Paul, one of our other writers, texted me after the first round and asked me that. Machida weighed in under weight for this fight, and looked tired early. I think he was really sick, but is too respectful of Shogun to ever use that as an excuse.
he probrably drunk his dad’s piss by mistake and made him sick.i think he cut that much so he could be as fast as shogun in this fight.
Shogun got robbed… That’s all that happened…. If the president of the damn company thinks u won the fight then u won!… That is the worst decision I have seen in the history of watching MMA…
all i can say that you guys haven’t already said is that this fight is GONNA SELL BABY!!!
hope shogun knocks him out this time.if shogun wins the belt i think jackson should bring his ass back and fight shogun.
Im all for a rematch. Rampage will get put to sleep again if he fights shogun
trust me they should have gave shogun this fight and I just read a article about a judge saying that shogun wasent affective. WHAT?!? You have to be kidding me shogun did all the damage.
shogun basically did all of the damage in this fight, anybody who doesn’t think so is in one of these three categories: 1. totally blind or in serious need of cataract surgery 2. put a lot of money on Machida and is embarassed and defending their winnings 3. or one of the three corrupt judges who scored that bout for the guy who clearly got battered the whole time. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – it is clear when looking at both the compu-strike stats and fightmetric.com that shogun literallt outstruck Machida in every single round. I saw this clearly, and so did everyone i watched the fight with, and everyone in the audience. Now Machida is coming out and pulling the same lame excuse bullshit about “oh if you watch the fight on mute it’s different.” No it’s not, the only thing that’s different is I don’t hear the crack of Shogun’s shins colliding with your rib-cage Lyoto “piss-drinker” Machida. Seriously, I lost a lot of respect for Lyoto just because he said that. He said “I was superior” and that’s a load of shit and he knows it. I can’t wait to hear what Ed Soares has to say, that guy might be more full of shit than Cecil Peoples!
And hell yeah, Rampage won’t take the fight with Rashad, what makes anybody think he’ll take a rematch with Shogun? He don’t want none of that. You thoought his leg got messed up against Forrest? Please, one knee from Shogun cracked his ribs. It took 18-20 knees from Wanderei to put Page down i their first fight. One knee from Shogun cracked his rib and had him holding on for dear life.
Yeah pun, I read that article. That wad Cecile peehole, he actually said leg kicks dint end fights!!! WTF?? Did anyone tell Brandon Vera this? What a douche! Did he machidas ribs? According to fightmetrics(?) & compustrike shogun landed more, so how is that inaffective!? Did he not see machidas lips? Damn, do we ever need strictly mma judges. If I’m not mistaken, mushin said Cecile peehole was a martial arts judge. I’m not 100 on it though. He’s too used to judging boxing matches to think leg kicks are not fight finishers. There needs to be judges that do STRICTLY mma so that they know how to properly judge the match.
Shogun put that clinic on Machida.. Where’s all the Machida worshipers now that their boy looked very human in his last fight?.. Some people even the audacity to say he could beat Fedor? haha.. Shogun had him on the run and for his rib cage’s safety last time.. Next time it’s game over.. The Shogun Executioner will finish Machida and take whats rightfully his already…
Yeah seriously, tell Thiago Alves and Forrest Griffin that too while you’re at it, right Cisco? Cecil Peoples has always beena prick though. He acts like he’s the shit and everybody loves him and agrees with him, and it’s like seriously dude?
Interestingly enough, I just read a piece on Sherdog about how Rampage backed Shogun and is outraged that he lost that fight.
