Matt Brown appears to be fighting more focused then ever before.
Matt Brown knows that James Wilks is a skilled fighter.
Brown also knows that the fighter that he faces this Saturday at UFC 105 could be far superior to the one that won The Ultimate Fighter.
“I expect to see the best James Wilks we’ve seen yet,” Brown told MMAMadness.com. “I imagine he’s improved since the show. I think he’s got a lot more to offer than what he showed in his last fights, he’s a very skilled guy.”
While Brown cannot be certain how much Wilks has improved, he is confident in his own abilities.
“It doesn’t make a difference to me, I’m just going to be better than him no matter how good he comes in,” Brown said.
“I train hard and I’m fully ready for him,” Brown said. “I think my style matches up good with his. As long as I’m mentally here for the fight, I don’t think I’ll have any problems beating him, and I will be there mentally for the fight. I fully expect everything to go my way.”
This fight will prove a test for Brown’s mental toughness. In preparation for the eight hour time change, Brown has already started sleeping on England time. He also knows that he is walking into hostile territory against the hometown favorite.
“How the crowd is… is how they are, it makes no difference,” Brown said. “It’s just two of us in a cage.”
Brown will also be fighting for the first time since his father passed away. While this would be difficult for some, Brown does not expect emotions to play a role in this fight.
“If I’m thinking about my father, I’m potentially adding negative pressure to myself and that’s just not something I need,” Brown said. “Some people might use that as a way to motivate themselves or whatever, but I try to leave emotions out of the fight.”
Rather than focus on the negative, Brown knows that the things he is doing would make his father proud.
“My dad would be happy to see that I’m doing the best I can, I’m working my ass off,” Brown said. “If he was here, he wouldn’t care if I won or not, he’d be happy to see me doing my best.”
This Saturday, his best could earn Brown a victory over the hometown favorite.
