Evans — Loyal teammate, Determined Fighter

Posted on January 2, 2010 in: Features

If he couldn’t fight Rampage Jackson, Rashad Evans said that Thiago Silva would be a fight that made sense. He gets his shot at Silva at UFC 108, and maybe with a victory, he’ll finally get to fight his rival coach.

Rashad Evans is set to take on Thiago Silva at UFC 108.

Rashad Evans is set to take on Thiago Silva at UFC 108.

Rashad Evans is no doubt a loyal teammate.

After seeing his friend and training partner Keith Jardine lose to Thiago Silva, Evans said the two exchanged a not so friendly glance, leaving Evans a desire to fight Silva.

The two will collide Saturday at UFC 108 in the main event of the night.

But Evans assures people that the look is just one part of the puzzle and that the goal is to get another shot the fighter who handed both men their first career loss — Lyoto Machida.

“We’re fighters have a same loss,” Evans (13-1-1) said. “We both want to get to that point where we can fight again. It’s a fight that makes sense for me. He gave me a look. He’s acting like a big dog.”

For Evans, it’s a return to action after a long layoff to film the 10th season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” He was supposed to fight his fellow coach, Rampage Jackson, at UFC 108 in Memphis, Tenn., but when Jackson went to film the movie, “The A*Team,” his fight was moved to start the new year against Silva (14-1).

The match became the headlining fight after an unusual amount of injuries hit the UFC, and the fight could have championship implications hanging in the balance for the winner.

Evans said that he didn’t get to fully get the experience of being a champion, as he was defeated in his first title defense, and if he does become the king of the mountain again, he won’t let it go to waste.

“I think all the fights from this point on getting me back there [to a championship]. I want to really embrace what it means to be champion,” Evans said.

While fans anticipate a fight with Jackson, Evans expects his rival from “The Ultimate Fighter” to return to the Octagon to at least settle their score that has been brewing for the past year.

“Rampage is a fighter through and through,” Evans said. “I hope he really hope he does well [with the movie]. But I think [fighting] is his bread and butter.”

With Jackson, he would be fighting someone that he has a little animosity towards, which is something Evans enjoys from time to time. But for the most part, he’ll fight with or without the added motivation to do so.

“I love to fight. Every once in a while, you don’t like the person, and I’ll like it even more,” Evans said. “I’m a professional athlete. Sometimes you fight people that don’t have any problems with because you got to fight. Fighting Thiago is a little bit of both, I want to fight him because he beat my boy.”

Not the most exciting, but a wins a win! Semtex, damn I’m impressed!! Jr dos Santos also impressive, but what’s up with that freakin ear? I was rooting for J Lo, but Sout put on clinic on his ass!! It was worth the money good performances all around.

sam stout will look back when he is retired at that fight as one of the best of his career.hazlett didnt try to take it to the ground but i think he knew he would be in trouble there also, daley stays tight and can control well on the ground and has nasty ground and pound.junior dos santos and nog deserve a title shot but who will get it as they are both friends?nice triangle by cole miller, munoz fucking beaty the daylights out of jensen.jensen needs his walking papers,he is going to get hurt, that was brutally one sided and not the first time jensen has been slaughtered.ellenberger impressed me loads.I WILL LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT I HATE RASHAD,HE IS A COCKY PUNK AND I WAS SCREAMING AND SHOUTING WHEN THIAGO CRACKED HIM IN THE 3RD ROUND AND I WAS SO DEPRESSED WHEN HE COULDNT FINISH THE GROUND AND POUND.thiago figured out the head movement of rashad which isnt hard,he was bobbing side to side when he is bobbing right throw the left hook, bobbing may work against the jab and uppercut but it dont stop a left or right hook.COME ON RAMPAGE GET IN THE CAGE AND TEAR THIS FUCKER UP.

Dirty D! I almost sip beer out my mouth when I read your last post! You Sir are a funny guy!!!!!… hahaha Your right though, anyone that beats Sardine up has to deal with his body guard the next time around… Evans showed why he is a beast wrestler but in the stand up he got owned… I though Silva was gonna finish him a few times in round 3… Daley is a wrecking ball on his feet but his wrestling is sub par and his grappling has massive holes.. I watched Jake Shields beat him a year or so ago….He might knock guys out that will stand up with him but any good wrestler will own him at will…. I’m a fan of his but he has to catch up on his grappling or at least make himself harder to take down if he wants to be elite… As much as I can’t stand GSP (and you all know this lol) he would slam Daley and lay on him for 5 rounds just like he did Alves….

hey redcoat, good to see you back on here.this motherfucker rashad with his cat piss breath is like a little annoying flea.it was good to see his face expression change when silva hit him hard,he looked scared.dare i say it rashad did look sharp and fast and his wrestling was explosive and positioning was quality but ufc are matching him up well, stick him in there with cotoure and we will see how is wrestling is then,i think tito will take him in a rematch if he get’s by chuck.did you see greg jackson smirking with gsp like a couple of bum boys,i felt like smaking the smirk off his face.since there camp has become really recognised they are getting really cocky.gsp with his boring wrestling,he should try and defend his belt like silva once in a while.i know hardy aint going to stop the takedown so i hope he smacks him hard and moves every chance.karlos vemola needs to come over to the ufc,he is an animal and i think he could take carwin out,i do like carwin actually but he trains with them dicks and im rooting against all jackson camp members in future fights.

    Happy New Year Madness Fuckers!!!!!

Right now thats out of the way haha….. Shit, man was soo drunk almost forgot to watch 108!!!

Dos Santos hit Yvel with that hook but I thought it was a little early to stop the fight!!!

Hazelett,I like you….BUT WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING? You had some nice stand up against Kos,but Kos’ strikes like my niece compared to Daley. Lesson learned!!!!!

As much as I hate Magrinho,he did a good job against Mini Lau,quite slick!!! And Stout put the whoopin’ on J Lau….Happy New Year Lauzons???? Haha not!

    Munoz owned Jensen…Simple as that!

Oliveira and Gunderson was quite boring really. Ellenberger is the real deal,I said this before he was robbed against Condit, beat the brakes off of Pyle. Jim Miller was good,Ludwig is not what he once was….and he never was that good!!!

Thiago Silva could have finished Rashad if his cardio would have been just that little bit better. But seriously,he’s a gonna be a top contender for a long time to come. Gives a good interview in his broken English aswell hahaha.

Evans is a whiney little bitch, did a lot of laying and praying. He won’t be able to do that against Page. Page will get up,pick his little bitch ass up and dump that mother fucker right on top of his head. Evans standup is not that good,he knocked a Liddell out who is waaaaay past his prime and TKO’d Griffin who has a jaw like my double glazing windows. Evans will be like the ‘Fish outta water’ that Page called him yet again, gasping again after being knocked the fuck out!!! WAR RAMPAGE

  8. Posted January 4, 2010 at 5:01 pm

It wouldn’t be a sporting bet to say GSP will finish Hardy. He’s dominate, I know Red hates him and you guys know I hate BJ but they’re both great and will beat up anyone in their divisions.
I love the fact that an almost journey man like Daley is doing big things in the UFC. There have been so many fighters that came into the UFC and got their shot to do it big and fell flat on their faces.
I hope PAGE comes back and knocks Evans out like he did Chuck. Evans is Mr gameplan until he gets knocked…whole different ball game with Page tho.

Some of you guys will probably disagree with me, but hear me out. Thiago Silva fuckin WON THAT FIGHT. Rashad won the first round sure, but the second round? Takedowns shouldn’t count unless you actually do something and threaten on the ground. Rashad didn’t do that at all. He took him down, but Thiago controlled him. Did Evans pass Thiago’s guard? NO. Did Evans hurt Thiago on the ground? NO. Then, Thiago puts the whoop-ass on Rashad in the last round but loses? Come on!

Also, as much as I would like to see it, I don’t see Dan Hardy beating GSP. If Thiago Alves couldn’t beat GSP or KO him, Dan Hardy almost certainly won’t. Alves was the more proven fighter coming into his title shot, even though Hardy has earned his shot and proved he’s no joke.

id have to watch it again kimura to see if you are right but i do remember silva landing the crisper cleaner and more strikes but evans was working him for longer forcing him into the cage takeing him down, thiago was always on the defence apart rom when he threw his shots in rounds 1 and 2.if he wasnt so tired he could have made the final round a 10-8 because rashad was done after that big punch,if thiago could have mounted him after that and dominated the round who knows he may have got a 10-8 and a draw but i dont think silva won the first 2 rounds based on me watching it live.

my opinion, a little anti-partisanship is bending some views on this one. Evans totally controlled the fight in rds. 1 and 2, to the point where Silva had an absolutlely frustrated and defeated look on his face as he sat against the cage, unable to stop the quicker, more powerful wrestler from taking him down. come on man, three unanswered takedowns in a round has to count for something, and if you don’t have an answer for your opponent’s technique, you lose…

If Thiago had closed the deal in rd. 3, all props to him and on up the ladder. He didn’t do it, and let Rashad off the hook. Train harder next time, do more road work, and maybe Silva will have the endurance to take it to the bank… Excellent tactical victory for Evans, and Rampage should view this fight as an object lesson, and start training hard NOW. Looking forward to this grudge match.

I have to agree with you Mushin, Silva was extremely frustrated to the point where he was taunting Rashad just to get him to engage. Which surprisingly he didn’t, which showed maturation on the part of Rashad. No showboating this time just get the deed done and get out, barely. Strange how no one is calling out Silva for showboating or being cocky and putting his hands down, the same acts that make people dislike Rashad so much. Thiago lost this one easily because he ha no answer for Rashads take downs and didn’t capitalize in the 3rd only because he was gassed. Rashad won by the dreaded lay and pray. I don’t see Rashad the same as most here, maybe because I’ve watched him since his tuf days. I rooted for him then and I root for him now. I even want him to beat the crap outta Rampage! Rampage used to be one of my favorites, but after watching him be such an a hole on tuf he no longer is. He was demeaning towards a lot of the cast and left his fighters hanging when he didn’t get his way. I expected the immaturity just not him being a dipshit.
Boo I hear you on the Hazelett/Daley fight, I like watching Dustin pull his crazy ass subs.” What the F@@k where thinking?” is right on the money!! JC, I think we all have that one fighter who just rubs us wrong no matter what! I can’t stand Machida for sh!t and I admit he’s a great fighter, but I was happier than a pig in mud watching Shogun tear his ass up! I actually was starting to respect the piss drinking guy and then that BS happened and he acted like it was right!!! I hope shogun ko’s his ass!!!

you know when these guys actually do fight evans and rampage that is it would have been over a year since the face-off in the centre of the octagon when sardine got his ass handed to him.i feel like ive been taken the piss out of somewhat, leave these grudge matches too long and the fizz goes, look at serra vs hughes, they had lost the hatred for each other by time the fight rolled round, yeah serra still though he was a jerk-off but he still does but he didnt hate him like once was and hughes felt past disrespected and would have loved a victory because of that but hughes didnt look angry,he took that fight as just another fight do you know why? because he never tried punishing serra he laid on him when he could and played it smart not like if he hated his guts and took risks to smash his head in.the fizz is going out of this fight as rampage has been quiet and evans has calmed his shit talking down, maybe he should beat sardine again then evans will be mad at him again.only shit talking and person shit talking will get this fire going again,as we head closer to the fight i dont think evans will keep quite so he may piss rampage off then lights out lollypop head cat piss breath.

Mu Shin, I know what you’re saing, Rashad took him down effortlessly it seemed, but the way I see it, takedowns are a means to an end. A fight is a fight, not a wrestling match. If he could have done some ground and pound damage or passed guard to advance his position, that would have been effective grappling, but Thiago was the one who displayed effective grappling by keeping Rashad in his guard. I kind of saw round 2 as a draw, and round 3 was dangerously close to a 10-8 round for Thiago Silva. Sure you can say Rashad won with takedowns, but who’s the one who really got his ass beat? Not Thiago.

Seriuosly though, Page was ko’d sick by wandy and he still fought him again, but maybe it’s cause he didn’t remember that ass whoopin! Shogun beat his ass like a redheaded step child nasty and I bet he still remembers that. He’d go into that one afraid. He didn’t do throw the ropes with him, he go his ribs broken and he got smashed! Jardine, Vera, and Hammil are all disappointments! I thought those three were gonna a lot better than they are! Vera was smashing fools at hw til he ran into Sylvia, I thought him going to 205 would make badass, but instead he was boring. Hammil I expected to be a contender after the beating he put on bisping, but he never evolved and stayed at the same level. Jardine just sucks ass, he went the distance with chuck and dropped him for gods sake!! How the hell does this guy stay in the ufc so long? He always is on then off! Yeah, Jardine would jumo in the Octagon to save Rashad, but you know what would happen? Rampage would throw a big hook at Rashad, ashad would duck, and it would catch Sardine rushing in. After that, Sardine’s chin would obviously fail him once again…and Rampage would have KOd him even after he beat his ass at 96 haha!

8-3 in my Fight Night 20 picks, one of my best nights of picks ever haha. I have to say I am totally unimpressed with Gray Maynard. I don’t see him getting the next shot at Penn after this fight, regardless of how much he deserved it before the Diaz fight.

Who I am very impressed with after this event is Evan Dunham. The kid is a bad motherfucker. He beat up the once highly-regarded Marcus Aurelio, who I picked to beat him, and now he displays some serious grappling skills by armbarring Escudero. I admit, I had my doubts about what Escudero would be able to do once he got put on his back, and it seems like I was right on the money. Still though, Evan Dunham goes even further to show why he’s one of 155’s young guns and moving closer to being considered a top UFC lightweight.

Also, how about Aaron Simpson. There were like four or five times in that first round where I was sure he was done, Lawlor was all over him. with power punches, knees, and great combinations, and Simpson took all of it. Not only did e survive a vicious beating, he came back to win the fight. That shows great ability to both recover physically after taking some serious damage right to the dome, but also a great ability to recover mentally and stay in the fight after being totally dummied and dominated.
