Great night of fights right here in my neighborhood. Just returned from a small vacation or I would have tried to go over to Fairfax and catch the action live…
Ben Henderson did a great job on Jamie Varner with that standing guillotine. Varner proved he’s a poor loser and worse sportsman with his post fight comments, forgetting that in the sport of MMA, getting choked out equals getting beaten.
Great return victory for Uriah Faber. Personally, I’d like to see him fight Mike Brown and then contest for the title, but it sounds like he’s now in line for a shot at champion Jose Aldo. That will be a tough match for Uriah, and should be a great fight, as Aldo is a monster at 145, with great skills in every realm of MMA.
Appreciated Mike Brown’s win as well, but his opponent was not nearly as dangerous as Assuncao who fought Faber. Several of the earlier fights were also good contests, and overall, WEC 46 was a really good event. Just wish I could have been there…
Ben Henderson is for real! Worthy Champion!
Jamie Varner doesn’t deserve the ink, ya know…cry baby!!!
cONGRATULATIONS TO fABER AND bROWN…both had stud performances last night. As Usual, I wan very entertained by the WEC fighters!!!
Hell yeah, once again the WEC delivers a badass card. All I can say about Urijah Faber is DAMN SON. I definatley favored him to win, but I didn’t think he would ever tap Assuncao. The set-up to that choke was sick too! He took the back sooo quick and didn’t even have both hooks in when he sunk it in. Great fight too from both guys. I don’t know that Faber will beat Aldo, but it very well might be one of the most exciting fights in featherweight history. Of course, that’s only if Fabere doesn’t get “Mike Browned” by Aldo.
Also, very impressed with Mark Mominick’s ground-game. Great sweep to triangle combination.
Also, the Ben Henderson/Jaime Varner fight showed me a couple things. Varner is a dangerous boxer that people don’t want to mess with on the feet. I totally agree with Varner when he said Henderson only threw body kicks and didn’t really want to fight him. Varner was clearly winning that fght until he made a stupid mistake and got choked out. I would love to see Cowboy get a rematch wth both guys, he’s tougher and more skilled than either of them in my opinion. Personally, I think Cowboy won the fight with Henderson anyway, but it was very close so it’s understandable that Henderson got the decision.
Agree that Henderson was getting the worst of the standup battle, but the last time I looked, boxing/kickboxing was only one aspect of an MMA fight. Henderson was totally engaged in the fight, was not running or overly defensive, landed some strong kicks to the body, and applied a perfect submission technique to win a championship fight. He may not have wanted to box Varner, but he certainly showed up to fight, and he won convincingly.
Brock Lesnar was clearly winning the first fight with Frank Mir, until Mir submitted him. Many people (I’m not one of them) thought Andrei Arlovski was winning the fight with Fedor until he got knocked out. Can’t really see what that means when the outcomes were so definitive. Same here: Ben Henderson was the better fighter on this given night, and is a deserving champion, having applied superior technique and overcome a strong opponent.
p.s.- I thought Cerrone did enough to win the Henderson fight too. Toughness is certainly not Cowboy’s problem, and given a rematch, I definitely think he could give Henderson or Varner all they could handle. With such well matched highly skilled fighters, I really think its impossible to call one better than the other, when a contest can be decided by a razor’s edge in a decision, or a see-saw battle ends up going one way or another on a particular evening.
mu shin, i was really annoyed at what Varner said…hello, it’s MMA. Last time I checked that stood for Mixed Martial Arts. I’m getting tired of guys making excuses. I you lose, you lose. BJ, GSP,Hughes,CHuck, Randy,Brock,Wandy,Page’,Royce…these guys are fighters and have one thing if anything in common…they’ve all lost a fight. Get over it and don’t get caught next time. He was winning on the feet but he got caught, end of discussion. “i took steroids but I wasn’t meaning to cheat”…c’mon, I’m not buying McGwire & I’m not buying Varner…no wonder they booed his ass, Sacramento or not he would have gotten booed off the stage.
Yeah Varner pissed me off with his “I came to fight, Henderson came to grapple” BS. Henderson won, and that’s what he came to do Varner, so sack up and keep your mouth shut if you have to be a bitch about it.
Seriously though, how dope was Faber’s choke-out of Assuncao? That set-up was nasty and lightning fast!!!
